Cost Engineering
Sep 16, 2011
When people think of engineering in a metalwork project, they often focus on the actual physical product that is produced as a result of that effort. That is all good and well, but there is another side to the business of engineering that is vital to turning schematics into reality: cost engineering.
You can have a part that seems to be designed well, but if you can’t figure out a way to manufacture that part that ensures quality and efficiency, then all the design innovation in the world might not see the light of day. At BTD, we are fortunate to work with many innovative engineers and design teams from some of the biggest and most respected manufacturers in the world. An important part of the job at a metalwork company like ours is to figure out how to translate our customers’ innovation into something that is “manufacturable.”
By manufacturable, we mean translating engineering and design into something that can manufactured with a repeatable process that ensures in-tolerance precision, quality parts and cost efficiency. Many products are made up of hundreds or thousands of parts; ensuring every one of those parts is made with precision and with a streamlined production process is vitally important. Cost engineering is a key part of this process.
